Week four's chamber music concert spotlights two of this summer's sensational artists-in-residence—cellist Eric Kutz and violinist Irina Muresanu. Both have earned recognition for their command as chamber musicians—Muresanu praised for her “brilliant tones in shapely compelling strokes” and Kutz for his “easy virtuosity, and an unusually high level of ensemble playing.”
Muresanu and Kutz will feature in Dvorák’s String Quintet No. 3 in E♭ major, known as a “viola quintet,” for its addition of a second viola to the the string quartet roster. Dvorák composed the quintet during his time in America, finding inspiration in performances by the Iroquois people. Drum and dance rhythms are interwoven throughout.
Also on the program is Haydn’s Symphony No. 60, composed in 1774 and developed out of incidental music Haydn had previously composed for Jean-François Regnard’s play Le Distrait. The plot was an ideal match for Haydn’s innate clever sense of humor and the symphony is infused with his defining wit.
The program will also include works by Cras and Shostakovich.
