Loughrea Town Tour (Historic & General)

Begin and end at St Brendan's Cathedral, the town's most striking building, on this 90-minute walking loop through the heart of historic Loughrea. Along the way you'll follow the line of Ireland's last working town moat, pause at Bicknell's House — once home to a Clanricarde estate tax collector — and step through the grounds of the Carmelite Abbey and the site of the original de Burgo castle. The walk also takes in the old town mill, the former cavalry barracks turned community hall, the Linen and Town Halls, and the site of one of the district's most notorious Land War evictions. Led by a group of local heritage experts, it's the fullest introduction to Loughrea's long and layered story.
