Pre-Historic Loughrea Tour

The history of Loughrea begins at least 430 years before the Normans ever arrived. The earliest surviving written reference to Loch Riach appears in the Irish Annals in 802, when its fortress was destroyed by the King of Connacht. Barely two decades later, in the early 820s, the annals record the death of Fearghal mac Catharnach, King of Loch Riach — confirmation that Loch Riach was already an established political and administrative centre centuries before the medieval town was ever founded. This guided minibus tour travels out into that early landscape: The Long Point, with views across the lake to the Crannog of Isle McHugo; the Stone Circle at Masonbrook; and Rathsonny Ringfort.
