We are delighted to invite you to our next event with Hon Dr Gary Johns and Professor Anthony Gray presenting.

The event is scheduled for Saturday 8th of June and it will be held at North Shore Community Center, 701 David Low way, Mudjimba.

Our Guest speakers

The Hon Dr Gary Johns served in the House of Representatives and was Special Minister of State and Assistant Minister for Industrial Relations in the second Keating government. He served as an Associate Commissioner of the Commonwealth Productivity Commission and was the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commissioner.

The Hon Dr Gary Johns received the Centenary Medal for ‘service to Australian society through the advancement of economic, social and political issues’ and the Fulbright Professional Award in Australian-United States Alliance Studies, served at Georgetown University Washington DC. He was awarded a PhD in political science in 2001 from the University of Queensland.

He is a chair of Close the Gap Research, a charity committed to creating evidence-based programs and services that make a lasting impact on the lives of Aboriginal people in need. The Hon Dr Gary Johns is the author of The Charity Ball and The Burden of Culture and as well as other books some of which will be available for purchase on the day through Connor's Court Publishing.

The Hon Dr Gary Johns will present on the topic: Critical evaluation of the current Australian political system and the history of our major political parties. Can we, as people, change our current system and if so - how?


Anthony Gray is a Professor of Law at Bond University, Gold Coast. He held numerous positions throughout his career including Associate Dean of Law and is a former Director of Schools and Community Education at the Queensland Law Society.

Professor Gray is a passionate defender of freedom of speech and has written a number of research monographs: Criminal Due Process and Chapter III of the Australian Constitution (Federation Press, 2016), Presumption of Innocence in Peril: A Comparative Critical Perspective (Lexington Books, 2017), Vicarious Liability: Critique and Reform (Hart Publishing Oxford, 2018), Freedom of Speech in the Western World: Comparison and Critique (Lexington Books, 2019), Freedom of Speech in Practice: Controversial Applications of Law and Theory (Lexington Books, 2019) and The Evolution from Strict Liability to Fault in the Law of Torts (Hart Publishing Oxford, 2021).

He has published approximately 150 refereed research articles. His work has been cited by the High Court of Australia, Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and Supreme Court of Canada.

Professor Gray will present on the topic: The federal government’s proposed misinformation bill and its implications for free speech.

ENTRY Fee: $15 per person, non-refundable to help cover the cost of event outlays.

For those experiencing financial hardship, please reach out via email and we will arrange a complimentary pass for you.

Free parking available onsite. Tea / coffee will be available for a gold coin donation - all proceedings from tea/coffee go to North Shore Community Center).

This is an alcohol free event. Places are limited.
