Sat 28 Jan 2023 10:00 AM - Sun 29 Jan 2023 5:00 PM
Ashprington Village Hall (near Totnes), TQ9 7UL
Description
Fully booked but feel welcome to join our waiting list. At the time of writing, in the evening of Thursday 26th of January, you’d be the first on the waiting list.
An inclusive workshop that moves from simple scores into integrated improvisations.
We'll work or play in an environment that engages dancers at all levels so if you are relatively new to improvisation you will not feel intimidated and if you are experienced you will find yourself encouraged to move a little beyond where you are comfortable.
"Again and again he showed how a problem contains its own solution. A rare opportunity. Don't miss it". The Japan Times
Two days exploring accessible scores that open up spaces and allow us to make informed choices about where and when we move and how we connect with others. Exploring the edges of what we know - and dancing on occasion into the unknown. With opportunities to use both words and movement, the workshop will be respectful of individual needs for space, for rest and for challenge and is open to community or professional dancers and dance students interested in improvisation.
Adam Benjamin is a prolific improviser choreographer, teacher, published author and painter who has inspired generations to live openly and move joyfully.
Adam teaches with humour and patience and is practiced at encouraging us to look beyond the familiar.
Bio:
Adam is an award-winning choreographer, author and one of the pioneers of inclusive dance. He was joint founder and artistic director of CandoCo Dance Company (1990 – 98) and founded Tshwaragano Dance Company, the first South African dance company integrated on both racial and disability lines. More recently he helped establish the first professional integrated company in Japan; Company-Kyo. His seminal text Making an Entrance, first published by Routledge in 2002 was updated in 2022 in its 2nd edition.
Adam has been an Associate Artist at The Place, a Wingate Scholar, a Rayne Choreographic Fellow, recipient of an Arts Council International Artist Fellowship, and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2013 while on the faculty of Theatre and Performance at Plymouth University. He was amongst the first choreographers to receive the award of Change Maker by the South Bank Centre in 2015. A founder member of the improvisational ensemble Five Men Dancing, he has choreographed for community groups and professional companies around the world. He has taught and performed with amongst others Russell Maliphant, Kirstie Simson, Jordi Cortés, Rick Nodine and Gabriele Reuter. Adam is the director of The Dancer’s Forest initiative aimed at encouraging environmental responsibility within the dance sector.
Best of all, he’s a really down to earth guy ;)
