Shiras Planetarium 61st Anniversary Celebration: Stories Under the Stars

Celebrate the Shiras Planetarium’s 61st anniversary with an evening dedicated to the wonder of the universe, the night sky, and the stories that connect us to both.

At 7:30 PM, join us beneath the dome for a special collaborative program featuring Becky LaBrecque (Planetarium Director, 2017–present), Scott Stobbelaar (Planetarium Director, 1973–2002), and Joel Weisberg (Shapley Visiting Lecturer).

Together, these three educators bring more than 120 years of combined experience sharing astronomy with audiences of all ages. During this special event, they will guide guests through the current night sky projected across the planetarium dome, highlighting constellations while sharing stories, reflections, and conversation about what it means to teach and inspire under the stars.

Blending constellation stories, astronomy education, and personal experiences, this relaxed and engaging program celebrates both the beauty of the night sky and the people who have helped others discover it.

After the Program: Birthday Celebration & Star Party

After the 7:30 PM program (approximately 8:30pm), guests are invited to continue the celebration.

If weather permits, we will head outside for a community star party, where local astronomy enthusiasts will share telescope views of the night sky. Please dress appropriately. 

We will also serve birthday treats for attendees, while supplies last, in celebration of the Shiras Planetarium’s 61st year.

If the weather does not cooperate, the birthday celebration will continue indoors in the hallway outside the planetarium, where guests can gather, enjoy treats, and celebrate together.

Arrival Information

Doors open 15 minutes before showtime. No late entry.

Please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before the program begins. Doors lock at show start.

To protect guest safety and ensure the best possible experience for everyone, re-entry is not permitted once the show has begun.

Released tickets will be exchanged for ticket vouchers valid for a future show. Tickets not checked in before the show begins will be invalidated and considered a donation to the planetarium.
