Morning Session:
Presentation Title: "What does your “self” know about Adlerian play therapy?" by Kenisha Gordon, PhD, NBCC, ACS, LPC-S, RPT-S
Description:
If you are looking for a refresher or beginning knowledge of Adlerian play therapy, this session is for you. It will cover the basic tenets, benefits, and techniques that can be utilized for all ages. Based on the philosophy of Alfred Adler’s Individual/Self Psychology, Terry Kottman and various colleagues have been leading the call for strengthening the use of play therapy, specifically, Adlerian play therapy (AdPT). With the addition of AdPT to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) registry for evidenced based treatment, the amount of information is more readily available for practicing therapists but the approach still requires awareness, knowledge, and skills to be effective. When combining the multicultural components (Agarwal & Meany-Walen, 2019), the population types (Dillman, Meany-Walen, Nelson, & Gungor, 2019), personality characteristics, and settings (Meany-Walen & Kottman, 2019), AdPT has proven to be a valuable approach. Although the process can be challenging, the journey of self-discovery while being authentic can be life-changing for client and a rewarding experience for the therapist.
Target Audience: Introductory
Learning Objectives:
- After the presentation, participants will be able to recall the 4 phases of Adlerian Play Therapy
