Practical Geometry: What You didn't Learn In High School
Sat Mar 1, 2025 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Board Room, Beacon Feed Bldg. (Yellow Bldg.), Hubbard Hall Campus (11 Washington St.), 12816
Description
Can you draw plans for a building with a compass, a straight edge and a pencil? 200 years ago, our ancestors could. Before the Industrial Revolution our dimensions were not standardized. My foot rule might be a few smidgens longer than yours. Your 90* right angle might not match mine. To work together, we used geometry.
Come draw as our ancestors did, hold tools they used, learn what they knew. Begin with a circle; construct a square without using numbers. You will see how geometry is practical.
The illustrations and diagrams we explore will include the daisy wheel and the Rule of Thirds. After I introduce the ideas your questions and curiosity will direct the session.
Appropriate for ages 10+ (ages 10-18 with parent/guardian).
Session offered by Jane Griswold Radocchia.
The Fine Print: Registration to all Mud U classes is free, but if you can no longer attend a class, we ask that you email volunteer Betsy Shiland at shilandb@gmail.com.
Please be aware that we do share the email addresses of our registrants with instructors so that they can be in touch with you if need be and so that they can plan.
