Bass Boss Film Screening / Meet & greet with director Rana Ghose

This will be a treat! A premiere Montreal screening deserving of the Space Garage sound system. We'll watch the film, drink chai and chat with Rana about the infamous BASS BOSS.

In the words of director Rana Ghose:

"In 2018, I was trawling YouTube for footage of "Super Fast Kanwariya" Bhojpuri music for "ads" I cut announcing events we produce and post here. In doing so, I came across something in Bengali in my recommendations, a language I recognize given my own heritage. Curious, I clicked through.

Life has not been the same since.

I could parse what I was watching as far as a visual reference of a time and place, but what I was hearing was unfathomable. As I dove in, I came to grips with a pristine form that seemed unique to West Bengal, India - #dekbass - and how one person in particular seemed to both soar above and berate all other who dared to battle him. That was, of course, DJ Khobir.

For the next four years, I tried to contact Khobir, without success, until 2022. As he responded, I immediately set a plan to visit him, and in the summer of 2023, we finally met. I feel he was initially somewhat perplexed by why some random fanboy from Canada had travelled as far as I did to meet him, but over time I think he was just like "ok thats cool". I rolled camera and left the next day.

I showed this footage to Matt from @jamm_pro / @ninjatunewho immediately understood the relevance of this form and his work, and with his help, shot the film I wanted to make in summer 2024.

This form of sonic expression and assertion is of its own genesis. There is no reference to sound system culture within. It was rendered pure and unadulterated from the mind of one person: DJ Khobir.
