Course Overview and Objectives
Our People Moving & Handling Course is designed to equip healthcare workers with the knowledge and hands-on skills to move and handle patients safely, confidently, and in compliance with current legislation. Through a mix of theory, demonstration, and supervised practice, participants learn how to protect both themselves and those in their care by using correct techniques and appropriate equipment. The course promotes safety, dignity, and confidence in every movement — ensuring best practices across hospitals, care homes, and healthcare settings. This course meets the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Manual Handling Regulations 2007, helping employers and staff fulfil their statutory obligations.
Part 1: Theory Module
- The theory module is an online module on the HseLand website which is free to complete.
- It needs to be completed within the 6 weeks before you attend the course with us.
- Time required: 1 hour.
- You need to a computer or tablet to complete it.
- After passing the short online assessment, you will receive a certificate.
- You must email or print a copy of this certificate before attending the practical session.
- You cannot attend the practical training without this certificate.
Part 2: Practical Module
- This takes place in person at the course. Participants are expected to practice and demonstrate the practical lifts. If you're injured or will be unable to perform the practical lifts, please inform the instructor.
- Introduction – what is people moving and handling and why it matters
- Legislative requirements and employer responsibilities
- Managing people moving and manual handling
- Anatomy and back care
- Biomechanics and how injuries occur
- Ergonomic principles and risk assessment
- Safe use of mechanical equipment (hoists and slide sheets)
- Fitness and flexibility
- Principles of safe moving and handling of people
- Skills demonstrations — inanimate and people handling techniques
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the principles of safe patient moving and manual handling
- Identify risks and apply correct lifting and transferring techniques
- Demonstrate safe use of equipment such as hoists and slide sheets
- Protect personal health and prevent back injuries
- Maintain patient dignity and safety during movement
- Comply with current health and safety legislation
- Complete manual handling and people moving tasks confidently and correctly

- Exam Paper

Certification
- On successful completion, participants receive a MultiSkill Health & Safety People Moving & Handling Certificate, valid for 2 years.
- All our instructors are QQI-qualified and courses are fully compliant with Health and Safety Authority (HSA) standards.
- Recertification must be completed within the 2 years
