Being accountable for collections is key to maintaining public trust in museums, but it is also a necessity for managing and using objects effectively. The Spectrum standard provides a framework for accountability, but this is dependent on how policies and procedures are reviewed and implemented within a museum.

This session will examine what accountability is, why the Spectrum procedures are important for accountability and reducing risk, and what accountability can enable in the museum, allowing it to make the most of its collections to achieve its aims.

There will be opportunities to discuss with colleagues and ask questions throughout.

This session is suitable for staff, volunteers and Trustees working with collections, or overseeing staff and volunteers who do.

There are 24 places on this workshop. Places are available for museums in the north of England, priority will be given to those which are not regularly funded by Arts Council England or central government. If there are more than two delegates from a single museum booked on a workshop we reserve the right to amend delegate lists to allow museums from the waiting list to participate.

By the end of the session, attendees will:

  • Understand the importance of accountability
  • Understand how the Spectrum procedures support accountability and reduce risk
  • Understand what accountability enables
  • Know where to find more information and guidance

Before the session, attendees should:

  • Ensure they have a working microphone, so they can fully participate
  • Look at their museum’s documentation procedures manual
  • Look at their museum’s documentation policy
