Myths & Mortals (Voice and Piano)
Exciting young tenor Itamar Hildesheim joins acclaimed pianist Jocelyn Freeman for a slightly haunted recital inspired by Clara Schumann’s tours of the UK. Myths & Mortals takes inspiration from these journeys, interweaving the songs and piano works Clara herself performed with music that reflects the mythic, folkloric, and supernatural themes so beloved in the Romantic imagination. At the heart of the programme are echoes of the Ballades, Nocturnes, and Fantasiestücke Op. 12 that Clara programmed, reimagined here in music for voice and piano across centuries. It is a journey of legends, from the Lorelei to nautical tragedies, Blind Man’s Buff, and true romantic yearning. In honour of Clara’s real-life collaboration with Liza Lehmann in 1856, the recital includes a song by Lehmann, and moves between myth and mortal longing, tracing a journey as imaginative as Clara’s own. Includes works for voice & piano as well as solo piano by Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Liza Lehmann, Chopin, Rebecca Clarke, Pauline Decker, Brahms and Wolf.
