Sat 17 Feb 2024 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Moseley Community Hub, B12 9AH
Description
'The one granted wisdom has been granted much good.'
Where can we dig to find sources for wisdom that will help us to grow and flourish? The Sufis and others have indicated that the source lies within.
In this event we hear from renowned Arabic calligrapher Sidi Muhammad al-Amine Eatwell about his personal journey in illustrating the Hikam, a Sufi masterpiece written by the 12th century spiritual master Ibn `Ata 'Allah al-Iskandari. Sidi Muhammad has dedicated his life to mastering a rare and traditional Moroccan style of calligraphy. Together with his late wife Lalla Bashira, the couple compiled a beautiful copy of the Hikam in this unique style of calligraphy.
The event will include readings and a discussion of the Hikam, as well as a short film detailing the artists' practice and sources of inspiration. There will also be a performance of Qassida, Sufi hymns sung in the classical Andalusian style by the Safa Singers.
Copies of the book, signed by the artist, can be purchased on the day.
This event is part of Muslim LitFest Birmingham. You can find the full programme here: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/muslimlitfest
------------------------------
After converting to Islam in the early 1980s, Sidi Muhammad al-Amine Eatwell and Lalla Bashira became adherents of a Sufi Tariqa (path). This book is the culmination of 15 years of research and study and was completed in their house adjacent to the Zawiya in Madagh, Morocco in 2021. After being presented to the Sheikh of the Tariqa Sidi Jamal ad-Din al-Qadiriya al-Boutchichia, the idhn (authorisation) to distribute the book was given. The wisdom contained within this book is for all sincere seekers of Truth, but is of special relevance to all disciples on the Sufi Path, regardless of their named order, and anyone who invokes and practices the Dhikr-Allah (remembrance of Allah).
This event is hosted by The Zawiya Trust, a community organisation in Birmingham that provides a range of spiritual development, youth, cultural, community and health education services. The Trust is inspired by the teachings of great Sufi masters, in particular the Qadiri-Boutchichi Tariqa based in the east of Morocco, and emphasises the importance of purification, self-knowledge, knowledge of the Divine and community service.
