The Wisdom Tree: Illustrating the Hikam of Ibn `Ata 'Allah al-Iskandari

The Wisdom Tree is a unique, multi-sensory encounter with one of the great spiritual classics of Islamic literature—the Hikam of Ibn ʿAta’illah—presented through a contemporary fusion of readings, visual art, sacred music, and conversation.

Centred on the newly published English edition, translated by Lalla Bashira (r.a.) and beautifully illustrated by Sidi Mohamed al-Amin, this event offers audiences an accessible introduction to the timeless spiritual insights of the Sufi tradition.

The programme features live readings of selected aphorisms, paired with concise interpretive reflections to illuminate their meaning and modern-day relevance. These moments are interwoven with a musical performance of traditional Moroccan qasa’id (devotional songs rooted in Sufi heritage) performed by a small ensemble and accompanied by English translations.

A visual presentation of the book’s artwork, including a message from the artist filmed in Madagh, Morocco, offers further insight into how classical texts continue to inspire living artistic traditions. The event concludes with an open reflective dialogue, creating space for attendees to respond, connect, and engage with the wisdom of the Hikam on a personal level.
