'Islamic Influences on James Joyce' with Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad
Share this event
Renowned for his avant-garde, experimental literary style, few would associate the Irish modernist writer James Joyce (1882-1941) with Islam. In this intriguing discussion, Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (Timothy Winter) explores Joyce's personal fascination and study of the Islamic tradition - most evident in his final novel, Finnegans Wake - as well as how Joyce's use of language and style was directly influenced by sacred scripture.
The session will draw on material from Dr. Timothy Winter's latest book, Piper at the Gates: a theology of the embodied Muslim subject.
