An Introduction to Critical Muslim: Fascism in Plain Sight
Meet the people behind Critical Muslim, the journal that has been challenging how we think about Islam and the world since 2012.
Critical Muslim is published by the Muslim Institute with Hurst Publishers and edited by Ziauddin Sardar. Each issue takes a single theme and brings together essays, fiction, poetry and art from leading thinkers and new voices, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. This evening is an introduction to the Muslim Institute, the journal it publishes, and the community of readers and writers around it.
Hassan Mahamdallie, a director of the Muslim Institute, will open the evening. He’ll explain how the Institute began, what Critical Muslim sets out to do, and how you can get involved.
He is joined by writer and journalist Judith Orr, who contributed to the journal’s recent issue on fascism. In her talk, Fascism in Plain Sight, she will look at how far-right ideas and movements are creeping back into the mainstream, including the often-overlooked role women play in them, and what we can do to recognise and resist them.
The talks will be followed by audience Q&A.
