For many years now, I have found myself saying in Mythology Club, “One day, we will journey with Gilgamesh.” This is a story that touched me deeply when I first encountered it and has left a lasting imprint on my heart ever since. Over the years, Gilgamesh has surfaced again and again in our gatherings, as its teachings stretch through the fabric of so many stories. This past winter, when I heard myself say those words once more, something shifted. It felt clear: now is the time.

And so, for the first time, we will give an entire season of Mythology Club to one great story.

The Epic of Gilgamesh comes to us from a town that was once called Uruk, of the Sumerian people. It is a story that is older than old. Gilgamesh comes from a world still steeped in the ancient agreements between humans, the Holy, the Land, the ancestors, the stars, and the more-than-human world.

And yet, Gilgamesh is also one of the earliest surviving stories that carries our first attempts to step outside of those agreements.

Over four weekends, we will move slowly through this immense story, listening for the old agreements it remembers, following the mysteries of metals and deep water medicines, and wrestling with what this story might still be asking of us now.

I am deeply looking forward to spending this time with you and all the beings of Gilgamesh.

Wild and abundant blessings,
Stephanie
