Mythology Club Gabriola: Gilgamesh 2026/27

Time: 1-5pm on Sunday, the last Sunday will run from 10am-5pm

This year, Mythology Club is doing something we’ve never done before. We will spend the entire season with one story: The Epic of Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh comes to us from a world deeply embedded in the Holy matrix of life. And yet, within this ancient story we can also feel the stirrings of an emerging, once-unthinkable thought: that we are separate from the Land, separate from the Holy in Nature, and perhaps even exempt from the great cycles of life and death. It is a thought that would become a crack in the foundations of the old European cultures, eventually shattering ways of life that had been intact for millennia.This is part of the extraordinary complexity that Gilgamesh carries. 

Within one ancient story, we encounter both the memory of an intact culture and the beginnings of its shattering. And perhaps this is part of what these old stories have to offer us now: not a way back, but something that might help us remember, learn, and participate in the long work of regenerating an intact culture for a time beyond our own.

For our first three gatherings, we’ll journey slowly through the story in the spirit of Mythology Club—telling, listening, wondering, and following the old threads wherever they lead us.

10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. - Our final gathering, will be a full day together. We’ll spend the morning closing our journey with Gilgamesh. Then, in the afternoon, we’ll turn to copper, working with our hands to create an offering for the story and for the Holy beings who live within it.

I’m also so excited that we’ll be gathering this year at Wild Hawthorne Homestead. It is a beautiful place, lovingly tended by the good Leslie Wilkin, and it feels like a wonderful home for spending these winter months together in the company of this ancient story.
