Enamelling Workshop with Sophie Buckingham

We are delighted to introduce a new workshop at Nantgarw China Works as part of our July Summer Programme. Join artist Sophie Buckingham for a creative day of enamelling, inspired by the heritage and beautiful surroundings of our historic site.

Take inspiration from the delicate botanicals, wildlife, and decorative motifs found in Nantgarw's porcelain collection and summer gardens. Participants will work from a curated selection of visual references, including imagery from the collection and gardens, to inform and inspire their designs throughout the day.

In this hands-on and exploratory workshop, participants will be introduced to a range of enamelling techniques, including colour application, mark-making, layering, and kiln firing. They will explore the fundamentals of vitreous enamelling and learn the decorative processes of metal stamping, embossing, and enamelling copper.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have crafted two unique, nature-inspired jewellery keepsakes to take home and treasure.

Through step by step demonstrations and individual guidance, Sophie will support participants in developing the technical skills of enamelling while embracing the element of serendipity that makes this medium so captivating and joyful.

Sophie Buckingham is a contemporary enamel artist whose work transforms the textures, patterns, and colours of the natural world through the heritage craft of enamelling. Originally trained in Textile and Surface Pattern Design, she later completed an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at the University of the West of England. She specialises in kiln-fired vitreous enamel jewellery and artwork that celebrate the alchemy of working with metal and glass.

Alongside her artistic practice, Sophie has extensive experience delivering creative workshops in educational and wellbeing settings. Whether working with complete beginners or experienced makers, her workshops are designed to be welcoming and engaging, encouraging experimentation and curiosity while transforming raw materials into vibrant enamelled surfaces.

Whether you're new to enamelling or have prior experience, all are welcome.

Tickets are £80. Sophie will provide all materials and equipment. Hot drinks are provided but lunch is not included. This workshop is suitable for ages 18 and over. You may also wish to bring a notebook and a camera or phone to document your work.
