Glorious 1st of June: The ‘what if’ Question
Howes action had an immediate impact militarily , on the French Navy. The the large question however, is what if the British Fleet had caught the grain convoy. Would this have made any difference to the war in a country (France) which normally self-sufficient in grain. The talk will look at why France needed grain from the United States and what effect its loss might have had on revolutionary France in 1794, and what the impact the battle itself had on both navies.

Dr Chris Ware, spent 23 years on the curatorial staff at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich , before joining the University of Greenwich as Senior lecturer in Maritime History . He has published on certain ship types, bomb vessels and fireships, as well last tramp steamers. He has also published a biography of Admiral John Byng.
