Sweetwater: The Gospel of Iman explores the reality of chosen family through the eyes of Michael, a young gay Black writer, and Charlie, a struggling Black actress, as they navigate life in New York City during the AIDS epidemic. Their powerful bond defies conventional definitions of love, taking them on a journey that reshapes their understanding of intimacy, devotion, and legacy.

This production is the culminating project for Amiah McGinty, NBT's SOUL Producing Resident.

Public Presentations are scaled-back productions designed to center the creative process of development that allows our playwrights in residences the opportunity to dream without the pressures of criticism. The goal is to provide a unique opportunity for the playwright to be in the lead and for NBT to generate a creative process that allows their soul to be deeply reflected. At the end of each Public Presentation there is a talkback and feedback session with audience members to share in the experience and help to shape the next iteration of the work as a story builder.
