Inclusive Governance Working Group launch: how we can work together

CLTs have told us they want the CLT Network to create more space and time for members to come together to work through challenges, share inspiration and generate ideas around governance, participation and board succession. We’re delighted to launch a new peer working group to do just this.

Let’s come together to discuss how this might look and how to get involved. We’re envisaging this event being a taster of what future sessions could look like.

Why this matters for CLTs

Community participation and inclusive governance are key to the definition and purpose of a CLT. But we know that sometimes it can be difficult to get started or plan in. In this session, CLTs that have led community activities will share their stories, lessons learned and how they took their very first steps, and we will discuss in small groups what other CLTs can take into their own community plans. 

Strong inclusive governance, is essential to the definition and purpose of a CLT, but it can also offer tangible benefits, such as:

• A stronger community - communities who get involved with resident-led change develop employment skills, better mental health, deeper social connections and stronger community identity.

• Funders are supporting community-led change - increasingly funders like the National Lottery are asking for evidence that organisations involve their wider community and sustainably build community power.

• Nurturing your next generation of CLT board members - small opportunities to be involved in decision-making can prime people to take on bigger leadership roles over time, ensuring the longevity of your board.

• More credibility and political power - with your community gathering under the CLT umbrella, you can show local and national policymakers that supporting your work really matters and represents the future of your neighbourhood - and is less likely to be opposed.

• Deep community insight - by centring the diverse perspectives of your community, you ensure your group is acting on the real-world changes your community needs, building local trust and resilience for a lasting legacy.

What next? After the session all attendees can opt into the 12-month peer working group to share and try out best practice in inclusive governance, including practical steps towards getting more local people involved and engaged in your CLT's activities, decision making and leadership.
