Horatio H. Quiggle was twenty-three years old in April, 1861, when he walked to Toledo to ask for work from a local ice merchant. Instead, caught up in a tumult of patriotic excitement he enlisted in the 14th Ohio Infantry, a three-months’ regiment being formed by Col. James B. Steedman. That August he re-enlisted, this time for three years. In 1864, he re-enlisted again, determined to finish out the war. He was one of the rare “Boys of ‘61” who served all through the war, a total of four years and three months; mustering out in July 1865. He passed through the war unscathed, fighting in numerous actions, including the desperate Battle of Chickamauga and the other engagements around Chattanooga. He then fought his way to Atlanta, marched to the sea, through the Carolinas, and participated in the Grand Review in Washington. His memoir tells the tale of those times.

The speaker for the evening will be David A. Powell, Civil War historian and author. Mr. Powell is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute (1983) with a BA in history. He has published numerous articles in various magazines, many historical simulations of different battles, and twenty books. His works include The Chickamauga Campaign Trilogy, completed in 2016; The Tullahoma Campaign co-authored with renowned historian Eric Wittenberg; and The Impulse of Victory: Ulysses S. Grant at Chattanooga. He is currently at work on a five volume study of the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. Volumes 1, 2, and 3 are published, the last this year. He is currently hard at work on Volume 4. David, his wife Anne, and their bloodhounds live and work in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. He is retired and writes full time.
