Poetry, grime and dance unite in Debris Stevenson’s explosive new play about learning to fall, fail and find our own ways to fly.
Daisy and Luke are twins navigating life in a high-rise estate, where ambition and self-doubt collide. Both twins have labels thrust upon them: Daisy the “idiot” and Luke the “genius”. But will their bond and shared dream of flying launch them up together or crash them apart?
Based on conversations with young people across the UK and written by Debris Stevenson (Poet in da Corner, Royal Court), My Brother’s a Genius combines poetry, grime and movement to explore neurodiversity, sibling rivalry, and the weight of expectations.
Originally seed commissioned by the NYT as part of StoryFest 2024, My Brother's a Genius has been commissioned for full production by Theatre Centre and further developed through Theatre Centre's acclaimed Future Makers process.
Debris has worked with young people, NYT members and educators in schools across England to ensure the world of the play is rooted in the world of young people today. The development of My Brother’s a Genius has been generously supported by Creative Crawley and Stanley Arts London.
Accessible Performances
All performances of My Brother's A Genius are Relaxed. This means we take a relaxed approach to movement and noise in the audience. Latecomers are admitted, and you are free to leave the performance space and come back in at any time. Ear defenders and ear plugs will be available for audiences. A Chill Out space will be available for the audience to use if they need to take a break from the performance. The Chill Out space will be available before and during the performance.
The performance on Friday 20 March at 2pm will be Sensory Adapted. This is an extension of a Relaxed Performance, and means some aspects of the sound and lighting design have been modified. The house lights will remain on low during the performance. At the start of the show, the actors will introduce themselves and the characters they are playing.
The performance on Saturday 21st March at 2pm will be Captioned in English.
