The Westonbirt Natural Beekeeping Workshop

Join us for an inspiring and informative day at Westonbirt Arboretum as we welcome Simon Kellam from Natural Beekeeping Trust and Just Bee Eco Hives for a workshop dedicated to natural, bee centred beekeeping.

Whether you are an experienced beekeeper seeking more sustainable methods, completely new to the craft, or simply passionate about supporting wild honeybees, this workshop offers a thoughtful and practical introduction to alternative bee guardianship.

What to Expect

The day includes a blend of classroom learning and an estate walk in search of free-living bees. Simon will guide you through a range of topics, including:

• Free-living bees and how they thrive without human intervention
• The benefits of creating habitat for wild bees
• A bee-centred approach to apiculture
• Practical adaptations for more natural hive management
• How to harvest a small amount of honey responsibly

With a focus on interaction, discussion and real-world examples, the workshop offers ample time for your questions and exploration. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of respectful, sustainable beekeeping practices.

Important Information

The workshop includes a short estate walk (weather permitting) in search of free-living bees.  A good pair of sturdy shoes is advisable.

We will hopefully get within a stones throw of bees flying in and out of their nest. Protective clothing is not normally needed in this situation but if you are of a nervous disposition or react badly to a potential sting then a protective hood/top is maybe the way to go. A limited number of spare bee tops are available on request.

Hot drinks will be available on the day. There will be an hour break for lunch. You will have access to local catering facilities or you can bring a packed lunch.
