From the Wide Open Prairies to the Boreal Forest
Oct 2nd to Oct 8th, 2026
Calgary > Saskatoon > Prince Albert National Park > Wainwright > Calgary
Seven days | Small group travel | Birding, wildlife, night skies, and landscape photography

As autumn sweeps across the Canadian Prairies, a powerful seasonal shift unfolds. Cranes gather in spirals across soft golden skies. Snow geese rise in spectacular waves from prairie wetlands. The boreal forest glows with rich fall colour. Our photographic journey begins in Calgary and carries us into the heart of Saskatchewan at a perfect moment in the migration cycle. We follow the rhythm of the season, the quiet roads that tie these landscapes together, and the wild places where beauty waits around every bend.
With just five guests in our comfortable custom tour van, Neil Zeller and Chris Fisher will guide and care for you through an unforgettable autumn loop across one of Canada’s most overlooked and rewarding wildlife corridors.

Itinerary Overview
Oct 2nd to 5th
Saskatoon and Surrounding Wilds
3 nights at Saskatoon Inn
Private King Rooms
After departing Calgary in our spacious tour van, taking our time across the central prairies, we settle into our comfortable hotel in Saskatoon for three nights. From this base, we explore some of the richest birding landscapes on the continent. A la carte breakfast is included each morning in Saskatoon.
You can look forward to:
-
Prime Whooping Crane habitat with the hope of respectfully observing and photographing one of the rarest birds in North America
-
Stubble fields and wetlands full of Sandhill Cranes, Snow Geese, ducks, raptors, and other autumn migrants
-
A special evening at the Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve featuring a private dinner and exclusive owl banding experience. This offers an intimate and unforgettable time with these elusive nighttime hunters.
Incredible cafes and restaurants!
Our days here are deliberately unhurried. Everything is tuned to light, weather, and the movement of birds across enormous prairie skies.

Oct 5th to 7th
Prince Albert National Park
2 nights at Cedar Villa Cabins
Private rooms in shared cabins
We move north into boreal beauty for two nights surrounded by lakes, forest, and fall colour. Here we shift into a deeper rhythm of exploration.
Highlights include:
-
Misty morning walks along quiet lakeshores
-
Golden larch groves glowing in soft autumn light
-
Wildlife photography opportunities that may include foxes, deer, birds of prey, and more
-
Night sky photography above Waskesiu if the skies open for us
Our cabins offer private bedrooms, shared kitchens, and warm spaces for image review or late-night conversations about the adventures of the day.

Oct 7th
Wainwright, Alberta
1 night at Days Inn by Wyndham
Private Queen Rooms
On our journey back toward Calgary, we travel through open parklands and prairie valleys, watching for bird concentrations and spontaneous wildlife encounters. We stay this final night in Wainwright, Alberta. Over a relaxed farewell dinner we share highlights from the week and celebrate the images and memories gathered along the way.

Oct 8th
Return to Calgary
We enjoy a final day on the road through middle Alberta before arriving back home with full spirits and memory cards rich with the story of fall migration and Saskatchewan’s beautiful wild country.
Life in the Van
Travel on this tour should feel comfortable, relaxed, and inspiring. You will be riding in my custom photography tour van, built for long lenses, tripods, backpacks, and the real world of working photographers. Every seat has space, every passenger has room for their gear, and we keep things organized and accessible so you can be ready when a moment comes alive outside the window.
The van is stocked with drinking water, hot drink supplies, and light refreshments at the Bumper Café. This is your moving workspace, your warm cabin between stops, and a great place to share images, talk about technique, and enjoy the road in comfort.
You should expect frequent stops, spontaneous detours, and genuine flexibility. If the light turns interesting, we stop. If we see a hawk riding a wind line or a massive cloud of cranes lifting off a field, we stop. The entire tour is built around following opportunity, not chasing a strict schedule. That freedom is where the best photography lives.
