Meet the Author! Ness Book Fest is delighted to host local Author Evelyn Newman.

“Life beyond the waistline- the expanding role of an NHS dietitian”
Evelyn is a first-time author, living in Elgin. Having spent almost 4 decades as an NHS dietitian, she has put pen to paper and published a unique account of the dietetic profession through the lens of her award-winning career. She retired 4 years ago, after working across the Highlands over a period of 17 years. She is the first UK dietitian to have written about her career in a book, which blows away the weight-watching myths surrounding the job. In fact, most of Evelyn’s work was spent helping people NOT to lose weight. She describes the challenges of supporting a variety of patient groups- including those suffering from serious burns; spinal injuries; kidney disease and the many elderly people being cared for in social care settings. Work has never been dull, especially during the 7 years spent working a variety of high security prisons- in England and NY State, USA. She also had the opportunity to support professional footballers in NW England and had work selected for presentation across 4 continents. Volunteering for the BDA trade union, she even became the first dietitian to present a motion at a national TUC Congress in Brighton! There are many amusing anecdotes bit also sad situations- including the tragedy of the Hillsborough disaster in Sheffield. She has been very touched by how it has been positively reviewed by both fellow professionals and by members of the public. Evelyn is preparing to publish her second book in the Spring of 2027.
