The Bone on the Beach by Fiona Gillan Kerr

The Bone on the Beach is a contemporary mystery and ghost story – the Celtic legend of Deirdre of the Sorrows reimagined for the modern day.

Defined as the most tragic of all Celtic legends, it is the tale of a young girl, trapped by men’s perceptions and the expectations of her community. Her only means of escape endangers her life and the lives of those she loves. In this contemporary retelling, two stories and lives are interwoven – that of Deirdre and of Meghan Bell - who, fifteen years later, revisits the mystery of Deirdre, seeking the truth behind the legend.

Deirdre yearns for life beyond the confines of the village, and for excitement and love. She is restless and outspoken, and stunningly beautiful.

It is a dangerous mix. Only Brigid, her aunt and confidante, who has the gift of second sight, foresees the danger ahead. Twenty years later, Meghan Bell is fleeing the grasp of a controlling lover in the city, and seeks peace and solace in the village where Deirdre lived. As soon as she arrives in the village,

Meghan’s life becomes irretrievably intertwined with Deirdre’s. There are unanswered questions, and whispered secrets. And Meghan is haunted by

Dierdre. If she can lay Deirdre’s spirit to rest, will they both find a way to move on, in this world and the next?

About the Author

Fiona Gillan Kerr lives in a restored crofter’s cottage in a small Highland village by the sea. And it was here, on a walk one afternoon along a local wild and windswept beach, where she found a bone, tangled in the seaweed which had swept in on the storm surge, stranded at the high tide mark. Her first question  - “Whose bone is it?” Her second - “Why was it abandoned to the whims and tides of the ocean?” This was, she knew, the beginning of a story reaching back into the past. Here, in this sparsely populated landscape, where history dictated that homes would be burned and villages abandoned for centuries, legends continue to haunt, and the past is remembered by each succeeding generation. “It is ultimately the beauty and the mystery of the Highlands where I live,” she says, “which inspires me to write and imagine other lives and other times.”
