August 6 - Rod Countryman
The Notorious: Infamous Inmates & Unforgettable Stories of the Nevada State Prison
Executions have been part of Nevada's history since the territorial era, carried out by hanging, firing squad, gas chamber, and lethal injection. While the methods evolved, the responsibility of carrying out a state execution remained one of the most complex and least understood duties within the correctional system.
Drawing on nearly three decades of experience connected to Nevada State Prison, Rod Countryman offers a rare insider's perspective on capital punishment in Nevada. His career spanned roles as a correctional officer, prison investigator, Associate Warden of Operations at Nevada State Prison, and ultimately Inspector General for the Nevada Department of Prisons.
Countryman was directly involved in the planning and execution of Nevada's lethal injection procedures and will provide a candid look at the protocols, personnel, preparation, and realities behind a state execution. Through firsthand experience, he sheds light on a chapter of prison history that few have witnessed and even fewer have discussed publicly.
In his Chronicles talk, Rod Countryman will walk the audience through what a state execution actually involves - the preparation, the protocols, the personnel, and the lasting effect on those who carry it out - offering a perspective that is rarely heard outside the walls of the institution itself.
Note: This presentation contains mature subject matter, including discussion of capital punishment and state executions. Some content may be disturbing or emotionally challenging for certain audience members. Viewer discretion is advised.
