Description
For our summer concert, we are delighted to be coming to St Mary's, Kintbury.
Louis Vierne is part of the great tradition of French organist composers that stretches from César Franck to Messiaen. Vierne was taught by Franck, and in turn tutored Maurice Duruflé. His Messe Solennelle was originally composed for two organs, but was later adapted for a single organ. It reflects the late Romantic style of French choral music, characterized by rich harmonies, expressive melodies, and a sense of grandeur. Vierne's setting is solemn and majestic, capturing the reverence of the liturgy.
Benjamin Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb is a jubilant cantata for organ, choir and four soloists. It uses text from Jubilate Agno, written by Christopher Smart (1722-1771) whilst he was confined for insanity in St. Luke's Hospital, Bethnal Green, London. Rejoice in the Lamb has widely been recognised for its uniqueness and creativity, incorporating various vocal techniques and textures to express the eccentricity and fervour of Smart's text. It's characterized by its colourful harmonies, rhythmic vitality, and dramatic contrasts.
A Ceremony of Psalms is a choral work by David Willcocks, a prominent English choral conductor, and composer. This piece sets excerpts from the Psalms for mixed choir and organ. Willcocks' setting is reflective of the Anglican choral tradition, emphasizing clarity of texture, melodic simplicity, and expressive singing.
Tickets are £15, available online, from choir members, or on the door. Under 18's free.
