A workshop on the practice of theological communal discernment in times of cultural change.
Co-sponsored with the Latino-led Ministries for the Pacific Southwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church.  For pastors, parachurch ministers, lay leaders, and all who are interested in the task of biblical and theological learning.

DESCRIPTION

Over the past decade, Covid, war, climate catastrophe, political upheaval, and anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy, have produced radical social and political transformations. At the same time, we have experienced a “browning" of the U.S. and global church, in which the global pendulum of Christianity has shifted to Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and among immigrant churches in the United States. In the midst of such profound cultural and social transformations, our inherited Western theological tradition has some good things to say and some helpful tools, but is insufficient to comprehensively address such profound transformations and the ethical challenges which they pose. In short, we have a crisis of cultural discernment. Drawing upon the Latina/o theology concept of "teología en conjunto" and recent missiological literature, this workshop explores a framework and process of communal theological discernment for our changing times. This framework centers the life of worship, the community and perspectives of the local and global church (intergenerational, intercultural, cross-socioeconomic), and prayerful reflection upon Scripture and the 2,000 year history of the global Church.

ABOUT DR. ROBERT CHAO ROMERO

Dr. Robert Chao Romero is an associate professor in the UCLA Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies and Central America Studies, and Department of Asian American Studies. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in Latin American History and his Juris Doctor from U.C. Berkeley. Romero is the author of several award-winning books, including, “Christianity and Critical Race Theory: A Faithful and Constructive Conversation,” “Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity,” and “The Chinese in Mexico, 1882-1940.” Romero is also an ordained minister and faith rooted community organizer.

DESCRIPCIÓN

Durante la última década, Covid, la guerra, la catástrofe climática, la agitación política, y la retórica y la política anti-inmigrante, han producido transformaciones sociales y políticas radicales. Al mismo tiempo, hemos experimentado un «oscurecimiento» de la iglesia estadounidense y mundial, en el que el péndulo global del cristianismo se ha desplazado hacia África, Asia y América Latina, y entre las iglesias de inmigrantes en Estados Unidos. En medio de estas profundas transformaciones culturales y sociales, nuestra tradición teológica occidental heredada tiene algunas cosas buenas que decir y algunas herramientas útiles, pero es insuficiente para abordar de forma exhaustiva estas profundas transformaciones y los retos éticos que plantean. En resumen, tenemos una crisis de discernimiento cultural. Basándose en el concepto de teología latina de «teología en conjunto» y en la literatura misionológica reciente, este taller explora un marco y un proceso de discernimiento teológico comunitario para nuestros tiempos cambiantes. Este marco se centra en la vida de culto, la comunidad y las perspectivas de la iglesia local y global (intergeneracional, intercultural, intersocioeconómica), y la reflexión orante sobre las Escrituras y los 2.000 años de historia de la Iglesia global.

SOBRE DR. ROBERT CHAO ROMERO

El Dr. Robert Chao Romero es profesor asociado en el Departamento Chávez de Estudios Chicanos y Centroamericanos y en el Departamento de Estudios Asiático-Americanos de la Universidad de Los Angeles (UCLA). Es doctor en Historia Latinoamericana por UCLA y en Derecho por la Universidad de California en Berkeley. Romero es autor de varios libros premiados, entre ellos «Christianity and Critical Race Theory: A Faithful and Constructive Conversation», »Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity» y “The Chinese in Mexico, 1882-1940”. Romero es también ministro ordenado y organizador comunitario arraigado en la fe.
