Bearers of God’s Image: Human Dignity Amidst Violent Polarization

Division, fear and egregious behaviors abound in this political moment. Is there something in Christianity that points a way toward unity and harmony? In this workshop, Dr. “Joey” Alan Le will examine the relationship between human dignity and the Imago Dei. The image of God can be understood as a collective appreciation of otherness rather than an individualistic capacity. When Christians learn to see beauty for what it is — as being and as difference — then they can finally see all things and all people, even political adversaries, as God’s beautiful, valuable, worthy, and dignified creations. This aesthetic attitude holds the potential to shift and elevate the Christian ethic, making the task of political engagement more charitable, hospitable and, in a word, Christ-honoring. Come and join for some informed discussion and relationship-building around this important topic. 

Naisa Wong, spiritual director, will lead a contemplative art exercise as part of the workshop.

About the Presenters

Dr. “Joey” Alan Le, a pastor at First Covenant Church Oakland, completed his PhD in Theological Studies through Regent University. He also holds a BA in Rhetoric from UC Berkeley and an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary. Pastor Le brings a variety of ministry experiences, having served as a Small Groups and Executive Pastor, Associate Academic Dean for a Bible College, and Assistant to the Vice President for a Christian School. Previously ordained in the Assemblies of God, Joey is now a licensed minister in the Evangelical Covenant Church.

Naisa Wong is a spiritual director with degrees in music and English literature and graduate studies in spiritual formation and trauma care. She is on the teaching staff of San Francisco Theological Seminary @ University of Redlands, New College Berkeley, and more. Naisa also brings extensive experience in the creative and performing arts, as dramaturg, writer, director, having partnered with many national theater and film companies, e.g., Lincoln Center, Center Theatre Group, Ebony Repertory Theatre, and Paramount Pictures.
