A Gospel & Society Workshop with Dr. Robert Chao Romero

“What will I say to my kids?”

We are living in a historic moment of crisis for the immigrant community. Latino and Asian immigrants and U.S. citizens racially profiled and arrested without warrants, and in violation of court orders. Parents detained in school drop off lines. Steep drops in church attendance due to fear. What is the calling of the Church at this time? Twenty years from now, what will we tell our children and the next generation when they ask us, “What did you do?” This is the central question posed by this workshop.

This workshop explores stories of Latino and Asian communities impacted by the current immigration crisis, and seeks to bring together sisters and brothers in Christ of all cultural backgrounds to connect, learn, and to act as one Body. Conversation and story-telling in pairs and small groups will be central to our time together. Three plenary presentations will cover the following topics:

• Stories of those impacted by the immigration crisis
• The Bible and intercultural theologies of migration
• Responding as the Church on the ground

¿Qué les diré a mis hijos?

Vivimos un momento histórico de crisis para la comunidad inmigrante. Inmigrantes latinos y asiáticos, así como ciudadanos estadounidenses, son discriminados racialmente y arrestados sin orden judicial, violando órdenes judiciales. Padres detenidos en las filas de recogida de niños en la escuela. La asistencia a la iglesia ha disminuido drásticamente debido al miedo. ¿Cuál es el llamado de la Iglesia en este momento? Dentro de veinte años, ¿qué les diremos a nuestros hijos y a la próxima generación cuando nos pregunten: "¿Qué hiciste?"? Esta es la pregunta central de este taller.

Este taller explora historias de comunidades latinas y asiáticas afectadas por la actual crisis migratoria y busca unir a hermanos y hermanas en Cristo de - todos los orígenes culturales para conectar, aprender y actuar como un solo Cuerpo. La conversación y la narración de historias en parejas y grupos pequeños serán fundamentales para nuestro tiempo juntos. Tres presentaciones plenarias abordarán los siguientes temas:

- Historias de personas afectadas por la crisis migratoria
- La Biblia y las teologías interculturales de la migración
- Respondiendo como Iglesia en el terreno

ABOUT DR. ROBERT CHAO ROMERO

Robert is an associate professor in the UCLA Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies and Central America Studies, and Department of Asian American Studies. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in Latin American History and his Juris Doctor from U.C. Berkeley. Romero is the author of several award-winning books, including, “Christianity and Critical Race Theory: A Faithful and Constructive Conversation,” “Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity,” and “The Chinese in Mexico, 1882-1940.” He is also an ordained minister and faith rooted community organizer.

Robert es profesor asociado en el Departamento de Estudios Chicanos y Centroamericanos de la UCLA Chávez, y en el Departamento de Estudios Asiáticos Americanos. Obtuvo su doctorado en Historia Latinoamericana en la UCLA y su doctorado en Derecho en la UC Berkeley. Romero es autor de varios libros galardonados, entre ellos, "Cristianismo y Teoría Crítica de la Raza: Una Conversación Fiel y Constructiva", "Iglesia Latina: Cinco Siglos de Justicia Social, Teología e Identidad Latina" y "Los Chinos en México, 1882-1940". También es ministro ordenado y organizador comunitario con profundas raíces religiosas.
