Italia 90, two Premier Leagues, the FA Cup and a special place in the hearts of fans right across West London, Paul Parker is a true trailblazer.

Occupying a unique position as the momentum that would revolutionise the English game started to gather, both in terms of culture and football, the defender was there as the foundations of the Premier League, and more, were formed.

On the pitch, after initially being dismissed as too small, Parker helped to redefine defending both at the centre back and out wide. In the middle, he brought a creative, ball-playing assurance to the position, while on the wing he paved the way for the attacking fullback with his blistering pace and willingness to mix offensive play with his defensive responsibilities. 

“He leaps like a salmon and tackles like a ferret,” Bobby Robson famously declared of Parker, although that wasn’t the only impression he made on the park as his iconoclastic rolled-down socks and tiny shin pads were decades ahead of Grealish and co’s current vogue..

Starting his career in the old First Division, and playing every crucial game for England at the era-defining 1990 World Cup in Italy, Parker was not only one of the Premier League’s inaugural stars, but the subject of a multi-million-pound transfer deal being British clubs.

Living up to the hype, he became a hero at Manchester United, helping usher in Sir Alex Ferguson’s relentless era of dominance and a cupboard full of silverware, before later enjoying a career in management, the media and beyond.

Yet West London remains a special place for the ‘Essex Boy’. Beginning his career aged just 17 at Fulham before the ‘nippy’ defender headed up the road to Queens Park Rangers, Parker made over 100 appearances at both clubs and earned enduring love and respect from fans. So it is to west London he returns for a special afternoon 'session' presented by New Gold Dream which is on sale now.
