This month, contributor Lily Lynch joins our co-owner Kit Dorey for an exclusive discussion on the UN's role in ending the war in Ukraine.
Lynch contributed to our recent magazine on The UN at 80. Her piece 'Trading Rhetoric' argues that the war in Ukraine has thrown the UN’s weaknesses and contradictions into sharp relief.
'The UN's impotence became clear even before the [Russian] invasion began,' she writes. 'Far from offering proof of the universality of anti-Russian sentiment ubiquitous in NATO member states, the UN instead has become a forum to demonstrate the fissures growing in the international order, the relative decline in Western persuasive power and the growing assertiveness of the Global South, buoyed in part by the rise of China'.
Lynch is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Balkanist Magazine. She writes about international politics from Istanbul.
