Description
“A focused, fun and original show. The photographer Lee Miller towers above Picasso in the centrepiece picture of this stylish exhibition. It is 1944. The liberation of Paris. Miller, advancing with the Allies, makes straight for the Rue des Grands-Augustins, where Picasso has spent the occupation holed up in his studio. She puts a hand on his shoulder. He rests a hand on her neck...”

This autumn, a new exhibition at Newlands House in Petworth, West Sussex will unravel and chronicle the extraordinary life of Vogue model turned war correspondent Lee Miller, a pioneer in Surrealist art, fashion and photojournalism. Opening on 10th September 2022 to 8th January 2023, the exhibition will focus on the artist’s relationship with Picasso and moments lived together, captured by Miller before and during the Second World War, the aftermath and beyond. The exhibition will also tell the unlikely story of Picasso’s accidental discovery of Sussex, where Lee Miller would eventually reside with her family.
Held in collaboration with the Sussex-based Lee Miller Archives and The Penrose Collection, as well as Fundación Bancaja in Spain, Lee Miller & Picasso opens to the public on 10th September 2022 and will continue through to 8th January 2023, the year which will mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Picasso.
In the intimacy of a converted Georgian townhouse, Newlands House sits at the centre of Sussex’s burgeoning cultural scene, spanning museums, art centres, festivals, vineyards, nature trails and stately homes. Since opening in March 2020 with a tribute to Helmut Newton, the gallery has exhibited the work of some of the world’s greatest artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, including Ron Arad, Joan Miró, Sean Scully, Liliane Tomasko, Julian Opie and Frank Auerbach.
