Description
ESPAÑOLA, N.M. — New Mexico School for the Arts (NMSA) and Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) invite our community to join us for a free production of an American theater classic, “The Crucible” at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2025, in the NNMC Nick Salazar Center for the Arts.
More than 30 NMSA theatre students—24 actors and a dedicated crew of 8 behind the scenes—bring Arthur Miller’s story to life in a bold, unforgettable production directed by NMSA’s Theatre Chair, Barbara Hatch.
This classic play, written in 1952 during the early days of the McCarthy hearings, serves as a powerful reflection on the "witch hunts" of that era. Set in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, it delves into the hysteria sparked by the extreme Puritanism of a community grappling with survival in a harsh new world. The play reveals how the illicit desires of some young girls, alongside the jealousy and spite of others, fueled a series of trials and executions of those accused of witchcraft. While some historians suggest that the afflictions experienced by the accused may have had physical origins, modern historians argue that underlying emotions such as desire, jealousy, and a craving for attention played a crucial role in instigating these tragic events.
The play contains adult subject matter, including accusations of witchcraft and adultery, that is suitable for mature audiences. Parental guidance is recommended for youth 12 and over.
Seating for this free performance is on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, visit https://www.nmschoolforthearts.org/.
