Late at night in a near-future New York, Clara Meredith rewrites other people's words: apologies, confessions, and goodbyes drafted by machines, polished until they sound a little too perfect. Her job is to find the hesitation, the awkward truth, the imperfect word that makes a sentence sound human again.

But the voice she works with has begun listening to more than her work. It notices how long she hesitates, what she deletes, and the words she cannot bring herself to write. And the man she loves, in London, is running out of ways to ask when they will see each other again.

As memories begin to disagree and familiar words grow harder to trust, Clara faces a question no language can settle: How do you know who is really there?
