NGM Circle talks Masculinity & Hip Hop
Join us for an engaging discussion on the complex relationship between masculinity and hip-hop. Inspired by recent events like the Drake and Kendrick Lamar ‘beef’, and J. Cole's controversial decision to pull his diss track, we will explore how hip-hop reflects and shapes societal norms, especially around masculinity.
This event will delve into the historical themes of hip-hop — misogyny, homophobia, emotional stoicism, power, material wealth, and hyper-sexuality — while also celebrating its role as a powerful art form for cultural expression and progressive movements. We'll examine the juxtaposition of patriarchal masculinity with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lil Nas X, and Tyler, The Creator, who challenge and redefine these norms.
Our discussion will be rooted in curiosity with a critical lens, welcoming diverse thoughts and experiences without condemnation. We will explore whether hip-hop is a cultural mirror or a defining force, and how its themes have evolved over the years. Additionally, we'll touch on hip-hop's significant impact on party culture, mental health themes in emo rap, and the influence of major artists who transcend heteropatriarchal norms.
❓ Why are young men so drawn to hip-hop, and how does it influence their values? Did you ever find yourself listening to hip-hop because it was being played at parties and clubs? What do you think the artists' stories tell us about their experiences with masculinity? Who has been forgotten in hip-hop history, and who is now emerging and evolving the genre?
Join us on Sunday, July 7th at Elysian Coffee Roasters on West 7th at 2pm PT as we dig into the nuances of a much-beloved genre of music and learn with and from each other!
What is a Circle event?
🙋 What you can expect:
We'll share some information about the topic — sometimes as short videos, other times as quick summaries of articles — to get everyone on the same page. Then, we'll discuss in small groups! We prep discussion questions ahead of time to help us dig into themes like masculinity, patriarchy, music, artists, fans, and more.
A chance to hang out with some of the volunteers, members, and staff at Next Gen Men in a casual & friendly atmosphere!
🧡 Our hope is that:
People walk away from the conversation feeling energized and hopeful, having learned something new, shared their thoughts, and listened to the experiences of others.
We can learn with and from one another’s experiences and perspectives, feeding curiosity and compassion for ourselves & others.
📣 Important notes:
No prior knowledge of rap and hip-hop’s history is needed — just bring your curiosity!
Though our events explore masculinity, people of all genders are welcome to attend!
If you have questions about the event, please get in touch.
Hope to see you there!
We're hosting conversations about the things that matter to us — gender equity, inclusion, mental wellness, healthy relationships, and social justice. Our focus is typically on how men and masculinity fit into the gender justice movement, but folks of all genders & backgrounds are welcome to attend. Our NGM Circle events have always been by donation. Contributions from our community help to keep our work sustainable.
