Kōhanga Hāngī & Whānau Day
Join us for a whānau (family) day of kai (food) and performance at Clandon Park (GU4 7RQ).
Please pre-book your hāngī in advance (we always sell out) and remember to bring cash on the day for the stalls (baking, raffle tickets, art and Māori taonga).
Hāngī: is a traditional Māori way of cooking food using heated rocks in a ground oven, slow-cooked for 4-5 hours, our hāngī will include meat (chicken and pork), vegetables (potatoes, kūmara / sweet potato, carrots) and stuffing. We also have a vegetarian option available.
Programme for the day
- 1045: Everyone to arrive: briefing for the pōwhiri (welcoming ceremony)
- 11:00 - 11:45: Pōwhiri (welcoming ceremony)
- 12:00 - 13:00: Concert with performances from Kōhanga, Ngāti Rānana London Māori Club and Beats of Polynesia
- 13:30: Lifting of the hāngī : all welcome to the pit to observe this
- 14:00: Serving of the hāngī : please have your tickets ready
- 15:00: Raffle drawn
- 16:00: END - Karakia whakamutunga (closing blessing)
Who are Te Kōhanga reo o Rānana: we are a not-for-profit community group who meet on the last Saturday of every month at the New Zealand High Commission. We provide a space for tamariki (children) to learn and engage with Te Ao Māori/ the Māori world through educating our tamariki in kupu Māori (words and pronunciation), haka (dance) and waiata (song), more information: https://www.facebook.com/kohanga

- Please meet at the carpark for the powhiri (blue cross) at 10:45
- The hangi will be lifted at 13:30 (green cross)
