Genomics for Educators

Tue 18 Aug 2026 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Education Centre, Birmingham Women's & Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Mindelsohn Way, B15 2TG

We are pleased to invite Higher Education Institution (HEI) educators of nurses, midwives, pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) to join a 3‑day intensive “Genomics for Educators” course.

This course will be delivered by education specialists, clinical geneticists, and nurse, midwife and pharmacist specialists from Central and South Genomics.

The NHS Long Term Plan highlights genomics as a core component of future healthcare delivery. However, recent surveys of HEI educators indicate that many feel their genomics knowledge is limited, insufficiently grounded in clinical practice, and that there is a strong desire to update and strengthen curricula in this area. This course has been designed specifically to address these needs.

Course overview

The programme will support educators to confidently teach genomics within a real‑world NHS context, covering:

  • Core fundamentals of genomics
  • Understanding and deciphering genetic test reports and nomenclature
  • Application of genomics in clinical practice for nurses, midwives, pharmacists and AHPs
  • Ethical, legal and professional considerations in genomic healthcare
  • Personalised medicine
  • Practical teaching approaches to embed genomics within existing curricula
  • Pedagogy - embedding genomics into curriculums, differentiation, assessment, evaluating learning and modelling difficult concepts
