The webinar will examine the methods employed by the US to undermine democracy and effect regime change in Nicaragua. It will highlight the parallels with what occurred in the US in January 2021, when reactions to similar attempts to undermine US democracy in a violent way were markedly different.

The webinar will also examine the different strategies employed by the United States, including the imposition of illegal coercive measures (sanctions) to bring about regime change in Nicaragua and how the policies of the US administration towards progressive countries in Latin America differ widely from those adopted towards its client states in the region.

Speakers:

Francisco Dominguez – Francisco is Head of the Latin American Studies Research Group at Middlesex University, London, England. He is a specialist on contemporary Latin American political economy, about which he has written extensively. Francisco is a former refugee from Pinochet’s Chile and since his arrival in the UK back in the 70s, he has been a leading member of solidarity activities with Latin America

Teri Mattson – Teri is a Latin American campaign coordinator with CODEPINK, a current board member for Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas and an activist with the Sanctions Kill coalition 

John Perry – John first visited Nicaragua in 1984 and has lived in Masaya since 2003. He writes about Nicaragua and Central America for the London Review of Books blog, Counterpunch, Council on Hemispheric Affairs and other online periodicals and also acts as the local representative of the Leicester-Masaya Link Group which he helped to set up.
