As a soft wind blows along the quiet city streets of Cleveland, Ohio, you find yourself peering over a locked iron gate. The summer sun illuminates the massive four-story building that rises against the sky, impressive stonework harkening to the craftsmanship of an era long gone. You've arrived at Franklin Castle, long considered the most haunted home in Ohio, and perhaps the country.

The history of Franklin Castle is rich and plentiful. Built from 1881 to 1883 for German immigrant Hannes Tiedemann, tragedy soon overshadowed the hopes and dreams of the Tiedemann family. Emma, the 15-year old daughter of Hannes and Louise passed away on January 15, 1881 from diabetes. This death was soon followed by Hannes' mother Wiebeka. In the next three years, the Tiedemann family would suffer the loss of three more children, leading to early speculation that the amount of tragedy in such a short period wasn't natural.

Hannes ordered more construction on the house in an attempt to keep his wife's focus away from her grief, which resulted in the castle-like appearance that can be seen today. On March 24, 1895 Louise passed away from liver disease and Hannes sold the house less than a year later to the Mullhauser family. Hannes passed away in 1908, leaving no one to inherit his fortunes. The Tiedemann home was used for a variety of cultural purposes from 1921 to 1968. By 1982, the home had been added to the National Register of Historic Places, and was bought by Judy Garland's widower, Michael Devinko. Devinko worked on restoring the home until 1994, when he put the Tiedemann house up for sale.

The home sat abandoned from 1994 to 1999. The house sold in 1999, but tragedy struck once again when a fire caused extensive damage. The property passed hands several more times while continuing to undergo restoration. Franklin Castle was opened to the public for overnight accommodations on December 24, 2022.

While the history of Franklin Castle is incredible in it's own right, the local lore of this historic home has added a dramatic flair for those who believe, as many do, that the property is haunted. Tales of murders, secret Nazi party meetings, hidden passages and stairwells, and prohibition use have swirled for decades. Claims of a mysterious woman in black and the ghost of a child (which some believe to be Emma, the first victim of the property), along with many who report feeling watched or suddenly tired or unable to breathe, have given rise to the belief that Franklin Castle is incredibly haunted.

Legendary paranormal investigator Hans Holzer once referred to Franklin castle as "a frightful place filled with many souls" and, without explanation, refused to publish documentation of his findings during investigations he performed between 1960 and 1975. In 2016, Investigators Nick Groff and Katrina Weidman captured (among other evidence) a voice telling them to "get out" in the first televised investigation of the home for the television show Paranormal Lockdown. In 2020, Investigators from the television show Ghost Adventures captured an unexplained shadow figure on camera. Also in 2020, Investigators from the television show The Holzer Files captured chilling evidence while inside Franklin Castle.
