Sound Assembly
You don't need to know what you're doing to make music.
Sound Assembly brings curious adults together in Cambridge for four guided, hands-on music-making sessions. It's a chance to listen to music, explore sounds, try new ideas and make music together. No experience needed.
Part of Night Sweats Music, Sound Assembly builds on my regular youth music workshops in Cambridge, creating space for people to experiment, collaborate and discover new approaches to making music.
What to expect
Each evening combines guided listening, simple creative exercises, demonstrations and hands-on experiments using shared music-making equipment.
We'll explore rhythms, textures, samples and musical ideas, making creative decisions together and seeing where they take us.
You'll have the opportunity to contribute sounds and ideas, try different techniques, learn from others and take part in the creative process.
No musical experience, instruments or personal equipment required.
The focus is on exploring and making music together, rather than everyone producing an individual finished track.
The four sessions
01 — Find Your Sound
Thursday 19 November, 7–8:30pm
Share the music that moves you and listen for rhythm, mood and texture. Together we'll choose some starting points to explore.
02 — Play With Sound
Thursday 26 November, 7–8:30pm
Get hands-on with samples, loops, found sounds and rhythms. Experiment together using shared music-making equipment and see what develops.
03 — Make It Real
Thursday 10 December, 7–8:30pm
Explore how musical ideas take shape through repetition, contrast and arrangement. Make creative decisions together as we develop and shape sounds.
04 — Listen, Shape & Share
Thursday 17 December, 7–8:30pm
Listen back to the sounds and ideas we've explored together. Discuss what works, try different directions and discover how small decisions can transform a piece of music.
The four evenings follow a loose creative journey, but each session also works on its own. You're welcome to book the full series or attend an individual evening.
Who it's for
Sound Assembly is open to music lovers, record collectors, beginners, curious adults and aspiring music-makers.
You don't need to play an instrument or know how to use music-production software.
Just bring an interest in music and a willingness to experiment.
