Want to find out about the latest breakthroughs in cancer research? Ask the experts!

The public are invited to a free webinar to ask questions of leading experts about research into finding a cure for cancer.

Three renowned cancer researchers will be answering your questions in an online Q&A event on Monday 17 June from 6.30pm to 7.30pm (BST).

Cancer is not ‘one thing’ - it is an umbrella term for more than 200 diseases, and each broad cancer type has many subtypes which look and behave differently because of the genetic and molecular structures.

As it’s such a complex disease, ground-breaking research is constantly taking place to find the best ways to prevent and treat it.

These include the development of screening tests that can detect changes before they become cancerous, targeted therapies aimed at specific genes and proteins that help cancer survive and grow, the development of cancer vaccines, and if a cure isn’t possible, living well with cancer and beyond.

Our three speakers specialise in different areas of cancer research: Professor Robert Rintoul (early detection), Dr Pippa Corrie (novel therapies), and Dr Richard Baird (biomarker-directed treatments).

This webinar will be an opportunity to ask any questions you have about these areas of cancer research. Please note, if you have questions about your own health or treatment, please ask your healthcare professional as we will be unable to answer these on the webinar.

The Speakers

Professor Robert Rintoul
Professor Rintoul is Reader in Thoracic Oncology (cancer that develops in the chest) at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Respiratory Physician at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is co-lead of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre Aerodigestive Programme.

His research is focused on clinical trials, translational research and tissue banking in malignant mesothelioma (cancer that develops in the lining of some organs) and the early detection of lung cancer.

Dr Pippa Corrie
Dr Corrie is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is an Affiliated Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge.

Pippa is recognised internationally as a leading melanoma and pancreatic cancer specialist. She has worked as one of 6 national specialty leads for cancer in the NIHR since 2017 and has co-led the national cancer team since 2019. This year, she has also been appointed to co-lead the national cancer vaccine trials programme.

Dr Richard Baird
Dr Baird is an Academic Medical Oncologist at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre. He leads a portfolio of early-phase clinical trials focused on novel breast cancer therapeutics and biomarker-directed treatment strategies.

He is currently chief investigator for three investigator-initiated trials and UK lead investigator for multiple pharma-sponsored studies. Dr Baird is also the lead in Cambridge for Cancer Core Europe Clinical Trials and H2020 Research Programme on Novel Methods for Clinical Trial Design.
