About your tutor: Ernie Butler

Ernie Butler is an internationally exhibited and collected artist based in Elsworth. He trained under William Calladine, who was apprenticed to the old master Johannes Hendrik 'Jan' Eversen, and has spent his career mastering the techniques of the old masters – including studying the work of Turner, Constable, and Caravaggio.

His own artwork displays a distinctive sense of light and atmosphere, and his work is held in international collections. He has exhibited widely, including solo shows in Chelsea and Venice, and has been commissioned by Arts Council England for national touring exhibitions.

As a tutor, Ernie brings decades of experience. He holds regular evening classes and runs bespoke workshops, offering individual guidance and encouragement to help you learn at your own pace.

What you'll learn

Through step-by-step guidance, you'll learn to use ink to define structure and detail, followed by watercolour washes to create depth, texture, and emotional atmosphere. Whether you're interested in urban sketching, capturing landscapes, or rendering still life, this workshop will provide you with the tools to create vibrant, expressive artworks.

Ink techniques: Experiment with waterproof ink pens to create varied, expressive lines.

Wash techniques: Learn to apply transparent watercolour washes and explore "wet-on-wet" techniques for magical textures.

Layering: Master the order of operations – should you apply ink first or wash first?

Composition and focus: How to use pen detail to guide the eye and add focus to your paintings.

Mark making: Develop a personal style through sketching and observational drawing.

Why choose this workshop?

Relaxed atmosphere: A friendly, supportive environment that encourages play over perfection.

Take home art: You'll leave with completed sketches and the confidence to continue your practice at home.

All levels welcome: No previous experience is required – just a willingness to try.
