In the largely pre-literate Medieval world the use of real gold in manuscripts lit up the pages with dazzling effect.
Today this ancient art of using gold-leaf continues in the work of skilled artists and calligraphers.
We get the word Illumination from the Latin word Illuminare - ‘to light up’.
This workshop will teach you the skills needed to work with gold leaf.
You will aim to create a miniature work of art through the illumination of a capital letter, just as they did in ancient manuscripts.
You will be shown traditional methods of how to trace and draw your letter, precise application of gouache paint and how to lay precious gold leaf to create your own work of art.
Anthea will bring plenty of template Capital letters for you to work from. If there is a particular letter, perhaps the initial of your name or that of someone close to you, please let us know in advance and I will make sure you have what you need.
Your tutor, Anthea Power is a professional Calligrapher and Illuminator. She was awarded the prestigious Scriveners Prize for Calligraphy and Illumination in 2013 and regularly uses gold-leaf in her commissions and personal art work.
Teas and Coffees will be provided, but participants are to bring their own lunch or we are happy to recommend local cafes to source lunch from.
All materials are included in the workshop cost. Please select the ticket that corresponds to the hand that you usually write with.
