Co-Design Day: A collaborative approach to cleaning and processing of diverse arable crops for the North.

Fraser Farms is one of three Farm Learning Hubs launching across the North of England as part of the Northern Food and Farming collaboration!

This Farm Learning Hub will focus on on-farm infrastructure and local supply networks for seed and grain, with a specific interest in the infrastructure needed to make more diverse and agroecological farming systems commercially viable. 

On the 23 November, we’ll gather to launch the three year programme of activities at Fraser Farms, and begin the process of unpicking the steps that we can collectively deliver to move towards a more resilient food and farming system in Northern England.

After sharing some time getting to know each other, seeing the farm and enjoying lunch, we will hold a workshop to explore:

• What infrastructure do arable farmers need that they currently cannot access?

• Which problems could realistically be addressed through small-scale, distributed or shared infrastructure?

• What solutions could be developed, tested or adapted at Fraser Farms and beyond?

• How could the learning be shared and replicated elsewhere?

• What connections between farmers, processors and local buyers could enable viable food and farming businesses across the North of England?

The outcome of this workshop will be an improved collective understanding of how we can tackle these questions over the next 3 years, the role of Fraser Farms as a hub on this topic, and what the priorities each year might be for Fraser Farms as a Farm Learning Hub.

We hope the co-design event will be a place where farmers can see small-scale cleaning and drying infrastructure working in a real farming context, contribute their own experience, identify the barriers that remain, and collectively explore solutions that could strengthen Northern farm businesses and local food systems.
