Beyond the Island - Trailer:

Series Synopsis

Ben Larg is poised to grasp the professional surfing career he had always dreamt of. But just days after signing contracts with Red Bull and O’Neill he is victim to an unprovoked assault, derailing his career. The 18-year-old Scottish big wave surfer faces injuries, failed surgeries and self-doubt as he navigates the road to adulthood and battles to regain his place in one of the world’s most deadly arena's.

More than an action sports documentary, this is a coming-of-age story, exploring themes of psychological recovery, the modern day pressures of social media and the persistence to achieve a dream when the odds are stacked against you.

Why do we think the story is important?

Many people have the potential to do something exceptional but are put down or aren't supported in their pursuit.

We saw a truly inspiring story in Ben. A kid, fully set on his goal, no matter what others thought. Some tried to crush his aspiration as a child and he was met again with adversity as a young adult. But he powered on.

We wanted to tell Ben’s story while exploring common challenges in today’s society, including constant comparison through social media and the pressure it applies. We also wanted to shed light on the dark side of surfing: localism. Ben’s assault was rooted in this unspoken code. Through the perspectives of respected figures in the big wave scene, including Nic von Rupp and Andrew Cotton, we delve into a topic rarely discussed publicly, offering insight into a hidden aspect of surf culture.

Ben stands as a role model for young adults and anyone navigating life’s challenges, inspiring them to follow their dreams—even when the odds feel stacked against them.

Series Progress

We have completed production of a 3 x 30 min series and the post-production of Ep 1 with support from our production sponsors: Lost Shore, O'Neill, INEOS Grenadier, Julbo, C-Monsta and GoPro.

However, this documentary has grown into a far bigger and more powerful story than we originally set out to tell.

Your support will help us complete the edit of Ep2 & 3 by July 2025 and undertake the sound design, colour grading and marketing of the series.

We are navigating distribution discussions and aim to push the series out through a major broadcaster or streaming service in September 2025.

If you would like to discuss the project further or become a official commercial or private sponsor of the series please contact us directly at: info@northernfront.uk
