The Alderville Black Oak Savanna is the largest intact tract of grassland in Central Ontario. In 1999, local biologist, Elder, and artist, Rick Beaver noticed a mix of rare plant species on the site that are specific to two endangered ecosystems: Tallgrass Prairie and Oak Savanna. The Alderville First Nation Chief and Council protected the site from development, and for 23 years the Alderville Black Oak Savanna organization has been nurturing this jewel of the Rice Lake Plains by restoring rare native plant communities and transforming the Alderville Black Oak Savanna into a thriving grassland restoration, education and research site. The Alderville Black Oak Savanna now plays a key role in the future grassland restoration of this region by acting as a local source for native plants and seed. 

Embark upon a guided tour of the Savanna and learn about the practice of ecological restoration and the convergence of traditional and western stewardship.
